"BARD DAYS"
Shakespeare Camp for Youth
JULY 28-AUGUST 1, 2008
“SHAKESPEARE STARS SHINE IN BARD DAYS YOUTH CAMP
Though the works of William Shakespeare are over 400 years old, local youth still feel that “Shakespeare rocks!” during the Montana Shakespeare Company’s annual camp, Bard Days. This year, MSC is delighted to bring two of its celebrated actors back to teach in the week-long program, held July 28-August 1.
Coming from both coasts actors Chris McKeon, of New York City, and Tahni DeLong, of Los Angeles, have both performed some of the most demanding classical roles with the resident Helena company and are returning to work with young actors on developing their own performance skills.
McKeon graced MSC’s stage two years ago as the greatest Dane of all, Hamlet. Since that time he has performed in leading roles at Seattle Shakespeare and in NYC where he has recently relocated.
Tahni DeLong performed with the Montana Shakespeare Co. most recently in 2004 in leading roles in Much Ado About Nothing and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. She has also performed with the Chicago Shakespeare Festival, Colorado Shakespeare Festival and several classical acting companies in Los Angeles, where she now resides as an actress. Both McKeon and DeLong hold MFA’s in acting.
Says MSC’s Artistic Director, Kim DeLong, “It’s really a remarkable achievement for us to be able to bring Chris and Tahni back to Helena. Though it’s now difficult for them to return for an entire summer it is truly a golden opportunity for our students to work with these gifted actors. Aside from being extraordinary performers, Chris and Tahni are both very charismatic teachers with a wealth of experience to share.”
Bard Days celebrates the words and world of William Shakespeare through performance, cultural and literary activities. Students have opportunities to perform scenes from some of theatre’s greatest masterpieces, but also actively explore the Elizabethan world in a kid friendly atmosphere by dueling with insults, scavenger hunts, Elizabethan costume relays and battling in the hugely popular stage combat, taught by MSC’s artistic director, Kim DeLong.
Other faculty rounding out the program are notable talents who have worked with the Montana Shakespeare Company. Katy Wright, who graced their stage last year as Titania and who is a professional Equity actress will be joined by Mia Crivello another New York actress, and former Helena native, who will be doing a twist on Shakespeare’s language with an emphasis on hip-hop.
The program, sponsored in part by the Montana Arts Council, is open to students in grades 3-12; enrollments are still being accepted. For further information contact Martha Sprague, Managing Director, 459-4386, or e-mail at msc@montanashakespeare.org
